The Rise of Miniproteins for Dermocosmetics
Miniproteins, folded 1-5 kDa scaffolds engineered to mimic growth factors like TGF-β, are landing in serums faster than regulators can build safety frameworks for them.

Somewhere between a peptide and a full protein sits a size class that formulators have started calling the miniprotein: roughly 1 to 5 kilodaltons, folded into a compact three-dimensional scaffold rather than strung out as a linear chain. That structure is the whole pitch. A conventional cosmetic peptide is short enough to penetrate skin but usually too simple to do more than nudge a single signaling pathway; a growth factor or full protein can orchestrate complex biology but is too large to get past the stratum corneum efficiently. Miniproteins are being engineered to sit in the gap, retaining enough folded structure to bind receptors with some precision while staying small enough to actually reach the dermis.
The category has no dedicated INCI designation or REACH pathway separate from ordinary peptides and proteins. "Miniprotein" is an industry and marketing term, and in at least one prominent case a trademarked one. The Swiss biotech Activen SA, based in the canton of Vaud, appears to have done the most to popularize it, built around a lead ingredient called XEP-716, which the company markets as a first-in-class mimetic of transforming growth factor beta, or TGF-β.
That word "mimetic" is the interesting part, and it points to a history the marketing rarely mentions. TGF-β is a genuinely useful signaling protein for skin regeneration: it drives collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin synthesis and strengthens the junction between the dermis and epidermis. It is also a molecule with a documented dual role in biology, capable of suppressing early-stage tumors while promoting progression in more advanced ones, and topical growth-factor creams have drawn scrutiny before. A 2014 U.S. lawsuit alleged that growth-factor-based skincare could promote skin cancer; the case was dismissed in 2018, but long-term safety data on chronic topical exposure to growth factors remain thin. Designing a small folded protein that reproduces TGF-β's downstream effects without introducing the growth factor itself reads as a direct response to that unresolved question, engineering around a controversy rather than waiting for it to resolve.
Activen's clinical data for XEP-716 were published in Dermatology and Therapy in 2024 under the title "A New TGF-β Mimetic, XEP-716 Miniprotein, Exhibiting Regenerative Properties Objectivized by Instrumental Evaluation," with a correction issued afterward, worth noting for anyone pulling the primary numbers rather than the press summary. The company reports visible skin changes within two weeks and, by day 28, double-digit percentage gains in dermal density and elasticity relative to baseline. Secondary write-ups of the trial have quoted slightly different figures for those endpoints, which is itself a reminder that a single peer-reviewed paper, however favorable, is being filtered through several rounds of marketing paraphrase before it reaches an ingredient deck or a product label.
The discovery pipeline behind ingredients like this one borrows directly from drug development. Companies now use bioinformatic and next-generation-sequencing-based screening to mine animal, plant and fungal genomes for candidate miniproteins, then filter thousands of sequences down to a handful worth synthesizing and testing. It is the same computational logic pharma uses to find peptide therapeutics, redirected at cosmetic actives, and it explains why this class is emerging now rather than a decade ago: the screening tools only recently got cheap and fast enough to apply to a market with cosmetic, not pharmaceutical, margins.
Once a category like this proves marketable, competitors tend to converge on it from different angles, and miniproteins are no exception. Mibelle Biochemistry sells CollPerfect P6, an encapsulated hexapeptide derived from human type-I collagen, aimed at the same regeneration story as XEP-716. Peach & Lily built its largest launch to date around a MiniProtein Exosome Bioactive Ampoule, pairing a proprietary miniprotein complex with plant-derived exosomes, borrowing credibility from the separate exosome-skincare trend. Medik8 markets Liquid Peptides Advanced MP around what it calls Dual MiniProteins, one tuned for expression lines and one for growth-factor-style signaling, explicitly framed as a topical alternative to neuromodulator injections. Trinny London has adopted miniprotein formulations as well. Three different consumer promises, regeneration, biotech-adjacent exosome halo, and Botox mimicry, are now being sold under one loosely defined ingredient name, and nothing in the public record confirms that the underlying molecules share a mechanism beyond their size.
Market researcher Fact.MR has sized the miniprotein skincare segment at roughly $3.4 billion in 2025, projected to reach $6.6 billion by 2035 at an annual growth rate near 6.8%. That figure comes from a commissioned market report rather than an audited industry filing, and it should be read as a directional estimate of interest rather than a verified transaction count.
Safety oversight is still catching up to the marketing. A framework paper published in March 2026 proposes a standardized set of bioinformatic tools, including BLASTp, ToxinPred3.0 and the IEDB immune-epitope database, for screening peptide and protein cosmetic actives for toxicity and allergenicity risk before they reach formulation. The fact that such a framework is only now being formalized suggests the wider peptide and miniprotein category has been moving faster than the tools meant to vet it. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel has separate, established safety monographs for tissue-derived and plant-derived proteins and peptides; miniproteins, as a newly named class built partly on genome-mining and partly on drug-discovery-style engineering, have not yet gone through an equivalent review. Whatever their molecular pedigree, the ingredients arriving on shelves this year got there faster than the vocabulary to regulate them.
