Reader accounts, a newsletter list, comments and payment details are all absent, because the site asks for none of them. Personal data is not sold.
Analytics cookies
Function: measuring readership. Google Analytics 4 stores cookies and passes Google the pages you view, your device and browser type, the referring site, clicks on links to other sites, and an approximate location worked out by Google. We use the results to see which explainers are read and which need improving. To exclude yourself, block cookies in your browser or add Google's opt-out extension. See Google's privacy policy for what Google does with it.
Request logs
Function: security and operation. The hosting provider retains routine server logs that include the request time, the URL and the user agent.
Crawler record
Function: knowing which automated agents fetch our pages. Search engine and AI bots are identified by user agent, and only the bot's name, the page path and the time are kept. Visits by people are excluded, and IP addresses are not part of the record.
