Four Passes Is Not a Sunscreen Stick Dose
An SPF label measures a controlled sunscreen film, while a pass measures an inconsistent gesture. The available application study found far less stick product reached skin than the mass used for SPF testing.

The SPF number on a sunscreen stick describes a tested film. It does not describe the motion used to put that film on skin.
Under the US Food and Drug Administration method, sunscreen is applied to a volunteer's back at 2 milligrams per square centimetre, then spread as evenly as possible with a finger cot. Required label directions say to apply it liberally or generously. The federal rule offers no universal conversion from that mass to a number of swipes.
That gap matters for a solid stick. In a peer-reviewed 2015 study, 52 participants applied lotion, spray and stick sunscreens. The geometric mean application thickness was 1.1 milligrams per square centimetre for lotion and 0.35 for stick. The stick result was less than one fifth of the mass used in the FDA SPF test.
The study did not measure the SPF that each participant actually received, and it cannot represent every stick formula. It does show that format can change how much product reaches skin before the user decides the layer feels finished.
A pass is not a unit
Stick width, pressure, skin curvature, facial hair, temperature and the film already on the skin can all change transfer. A smooth glide can feel thorough while leaving a thin deposit. Repeated passes can add product, but they can also move the existing film or skim over the ridges beside the nose and brow.
The American Academy of Dermatology currently advises four passes back and forth over each area, followed by rubbing the product in. Its page, updated August 15, 2025, does not show a mass measurement behind that count. Four passes are therefore better read as a coverage technique than as a guarantee of the labelled SPF.
What the label can support
This is not evidence that sticks cannot provide their stated protection. A stick can meet its SPF claim when the tested amount is applied evenly. The practical uncertainty is whether an ordinary application deposits that amount across an irregular face.
For extended sun exposure, a lotion with a measurable amount makes the dose easier to see. A stick can still be useful for compact reapplication or small areas, provided the layer is rubbed in and missed contours are checked. Neither format replaces shade, clothing or timely reapplication.
