A Familiar Bacterium Beats Kao's Preservation System Again
Kao USA's recall of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo for Pluralibacter gergoviae is the second time in four years the same bacterium has beaten the company's preservation system, part of a wider pattern that also caught Kenvue and Tesco within the past year.

Kao USA's recall of select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo, announced on the company's site on June 30, 2026 and distributed to stores in the United States and Canada, names one identifiable cause: Pluralibacter gergoviae, a gram-negative bacterium found in shampoo manufactured between February 21 and February 26 at lot codes YR010556 (8.5 oz) and YR010566 and YR010576 (33.8 oz). Kao is telling consumers to stop using affected bottles and has opened a hotline and an email address, oribecomplaints@kao.com, for replacement requests.

That much matches what any recall notice says. What the notice does not say, and what a search of Kao's own recall history turns up, is that this is not the first time Pluralibacter gergoviae has forced the company's hand.
The company has met this bacterium before
In March 2022, Kao USA recalled Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer in 3 oz and 10 oz sizes, manufactured the previous October, after finding the same organism, Pluralibacter gergoviae, in lot codes beginning with the prefix ZU. Different brand, different product category, a leave-on body lotion instead of a rinse-off shampoo, different manufacturing window, same named contaminant, same company. Four years and two very different formulas separate the two events, but the bug is identical down to the species name.
Kao is not alone with this organism
Widen the search and the pattern gets less about Kao specifically and more about the organism. In September 2025, Kenvue recalled a lot of Neutrogena Makeup Remover Ultra Soft Cleansing Towelettes after internal testing turned up Pluralibacter gergoviae. Around the same time, Tesco pulled two lines of its Kind and Pure Facial Cleansing Wipes in the UK for the identical organism; the UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards rated the risk serious for users with a compromised skin barrier. Three companies, three product formats, rinse-off shampoo, leave-on lotion, pre-wetted wipes, one recurring name on the lab report.
Why this particular organism keeps winning
Pluralibacter gergoviae is not an obscure or newly discovered risk. Formerly classified as Enterobacter gergoviae, it appears by name in USP guidance on preservative efficacy testing, grouped with Burkholderia cepacia, Serratia marcescens and Enterobacter cloacae as organisms specifically relevant to cosmetic manufacturing contamination. Published research spanning two decades explains part of why. A 2002 study identified a bacterial esterase, PrbA, that breaks down parabens in Enterobacter gergoviae strains, and a later study found efflux pumps doing similar work. A 2015 study in the Journal of Applied Microbiology went further, exposing strains to methylisothiazolinone and chloromethylisothiazolinone, common paraben substitutes, and found that resistant strains had modified their outer membrane and overexpressed detoxifying enzymes, while remaining just as vulnerable to ordinary antibiotics. The organism, in short, has published countermeasures against more than one preservative family.
What the pattern supports, and what it does not
None of the recall notices, Kao's included, disclose where in the supply chain the contamination entered: raw material, process water, or after filling. That detail matters for assigning responsibility, and none of the companies involved have made it public, so it would be overreaching to draw a conclusion about any single company's manufacturing discipline from these events alone. What the record does support is narrower and more useful: a named, well-published, multi-mechanism organism has now cleared finished-product testing, or contaminated product after it, at three different companies inside about a year, and at one of them twice. For formulators, that argues for treating this specific organism as a standing line item in preservative testing rather than a general reminder to test more, since its published resistance mechanisms specifically target the two preservative families most cosmetic formulas still rely on.
